Buffalo NY

Historic Districts & Landmarks

Buffalo has an unusually large abundance of Victorian and early Modern architecture, a heritage from the turn of the 20th century prosperity (Buffalo had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the country).

Buffalo's wealthy class hired the best architects in the country to design their commercial buildings and residences. Buffalo has signature buildings of H. H. Richardson, Adler & Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Fellheimer & and Wagner, and the Saarinens, to name a few.

During the "urban renewal" after World War II, because of economic and political conditions, Buffalo lost relatively few historic buildings compared to other northeastern cities. This remaining stock is drawing visitors from around the country and world. Buffalo is becoming a tourist destination for its architecture (and art).
