Dear Mayor,
As we discussed at the Martin House dedication, I have enclosed the resolution passed by the Landmark Society concerning the 1089 Elmwood property and Mr. Pano Giorgiadis.
This resolution was given to our representative on the Preservation Board to offer assistance.
The Landmark Society can be helpful in showing how progress and preservation can go hand in hand.
Sincerely,
Dennis Galucki
Executive DirectorOctober 4, 2004
At its October meeting held on this date, the Board of Trustees of the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier passed the following resolution:
WHEREAS the Landmark Society believes that 1089 Elmwood Avenue is a significant building for the following reasons:
- It was the first house built on the east side of Elmwood Avenue in the block in which it is located, and further that
- It is only the second house to be built on the former Granger parcel located from Elmwood Avenue to Lincoln Parkway between Forest and Bird Avenues, and further that
- Architecturally, its design is inventive and its construction of high quality, and further that
- It is an excellent, indeed unique, example of a towered Shingle style house on a typical urban lot, and further that
- For many decades this building has been an attractive neighborhood landmark and a significant contributor to the scheme of the whole area, an eclectic mix of residential and commercial building, and further that
- During the Historic Resources Survey of the Forest Neighborhood conducted for the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency under the guidance of the State Historic Preservation Office, 1089 Elmwood has been identified as an historic building eligible for listing on the State and Federal Registers of Historic Places,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Landmark Society encourage Mr. Pano Giorgiadis, the owner, to demonstrate to the community that he has given adequate consideration to all possible options before a demolition permit is issued, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier offer to assist the owner, Mr. Giorgiadis, in examining the options.
