Preservation Groups Co-Sponsor Conference

The Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier held a Historic Preservation Conference, ì"Historic Preservation: Your Home and Your Community" on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora.

This event was co-sponsored by the Preservation Coalition of Erie County and the Landmark Society of Western New York. Welcoming remarks were given by Kitty Turgeon, executive director of the Foundation at Roycroft. Kitty discussed the relationship between the Arts & Crafts Movement and the Roycroft.

Two tracks of learning were offered during the conference. The first, "Preserving Historic Homes," focused on the research and restoration processes for residential structures. Presenters included Bill and Mary Ann Rolland, founders of the Rolland Development Corporation to restore historically and architecturally significant homes in the Western New York region; Martin Wachadlo, an independent architectural historian who is currently working on the Historic Resources Survey for the City of Buffalo being conducted by Clinton Brown Company Architecture; and Carl Stearns, a practicing preservation architect with Crawford & Stearns who is the architect for the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier's Warren Hull House Restoration Project.

The second track, "Historic Preservation and Your Community," focused on the how's and why's of historic preservation commissions, historic resource surveys, and the legal issues in historic preservation. Presenters for this track included Thomas Yots, a preservation design consultant in Niagara Falls, chair of the City of Niagara Falls' Historic Preservation District, and Niagara Falls Historian; Clinton Brown, a Buffalo and Niagara Falls based preservation
