President's Report / Executive Director's Report / Treasurer's Report
The Landmark Society's effort to volunteer our services to Pano Georgiadis is designed to seek an acceptable resolution to the problem of 1089 ElmwoodAvenue.
Our Society originally spurred thepreservation movement in the early 1970's by buying The Coit House (photo) to save it from demolition. Since then, our 34 years have been focused on advocacy and education. Now we are advocating that the 30-year-old Buffalo code governing 1preservation and demolition he given more teeth.
Because it is weak, we often react when it's too late. The 1089 issue gives us the opportunity to collaborate with Buffalo's preservation groups to push for strengthening the code.
It's a privilege, to have been appointed Executive Director of the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier at its September board meeting.
Our goal is simple: to fulfill our mission of enhancing appreciation of the built and natural landmarks in theNiagara Frontier through education and advocacy while growing a sustainable organization that is vibrant and relevant in the community.
In short order
- we have taken a significant advocacy position on 1089 Elmwood
- developed two fall weekly educational tour and lecture series, in Buffalo and Niagara Falls
- created a must-see daily website for current important information about architecture, history. landmarks. and at-risk structures
- created the "Adopt Your Favorite Landmark" project, and
- enjoyed a successful Hull House Harvest Dinner fundraiser.
Obviously, we are making a good start toward achieving our goal and I have been enabled to do so because we are surrounded by an excellent group of dedicated volunteers and loyal members.
The 2004 Board Challenge Grant campaign successfully raised $5500. Such support for the mission of theSociety is heartening. and the Board would like to publicly thank the members listed below. who donated anywhere from $15 to $500 to the challenge.
